Euphemio Fernandez – Fashion Designer
Euphemio is a 28-year old creative, hard working fashion designer. His work is based on familiar heredity and art. He is from in Linares (Jaén, Andalucia, Spain) and lives in Linares and Granada.
He studied graphic design and pattern design in Granada. Then moved to Madrid to study fashion design and tailoring courses. He is currently working on his own brand and is also a teacher in a design school.
What is inspiring you right now?
I like art and I explore (performance, painting, video production, collage, scenography, etc.) in my work. Cy Twombly, Calder, Rogier van der Weyden, The Bosch, and Basquiat inspire me in my work. But I have a lot of references to photography or cinema like Xavier Dolan, Ren Hang, Stanley Kubrick, Lars Von Trier, or Matt Lambert for example.
How did you come to work in your creative industry?
I studied Architecture for one year, and didn’t enjoy it. I prefer fashion and I went on to study design. Firstly, I moved to Granada to study pattern design and then I moved to Madrid to continue with my degree in fashion design.
What was your first job?
My first job was sewing for my family and friends.
How have you developed your career?
Working much and more.
What do you aim to say with your work?
My brand is based on family history, the history of art, and feelings. I like to tell stories with my work. I design trying to find an answer to my feelings.
How would you define your style?
My style is a temporal, unisex, and risky. I design for different women and men. For me, gender is not important. It’s important to be diverse.
What are the qualities that define an artist?
Differentiation, personality and creativity.
Paint a picture of where you live/describe it
I’m from Linares (Jaén, Andalucia, Spain) but I split my time between Linares and Granada. I love Granada because it’s a historic and inspiring city. I like to walk streets and get lost.
What is your favourite era of design?
I think 80s & 90s.
Who has been the most inspirational person for you?
My mother, my grandmother, my grandfather. In general, my family.
What’s the project you are working on right now?
I’m working on my new collection. The new capsule collection differs from my other collections.
Describe your “typical” daily routine.
I wake up at 7am and I go to my teaching job at design school, then in the afternoon I work on my fashion brand.
What project of yours has inspired you the most?
A performance about the fashion consumerism.
What are your beauty secrets?
None. I eat healthy, get plenty of sleep, exercise and work on my passion.
How do you try to stay healthy, mentally and physically?
Travel, take a walk, being with family, not using my mobile phone all the time.
What’s your favourite film?
I think Saló and the 120 days of sodom by Pier Paolo Pasolini. Also Dogville, Manderlay, and Antichrist by Lars Von Trier. Canino by Yorgos Lanthimo.
Is there anything in your career that you regret not doing?/regret doing?
Yes, I would like to carry on studying cinema, audio-visual communication, graphic design, product design, photography…
What makes you nervous?
Mediocrity, passivity, injustice …
Who is the nicest person you have worked with?
My friend Lucia.
Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
Working on my brand and showing internationally.
Do you dream?
Yes, a lot. I dream about having my own brand and travelling because of it.
If you were a perfume what would you smell like?
Very sweet and heavy. Alien by Thierry Mugler for example.
