Raffaele Ascione – Fashion Designer, Illustrator
Raffaele’s work is beautiful, feminine with a strong outline. He has lived in Ireland and London where he studied fashion at Central Saint Martins. After spending some time in Milan, Florence, and Bologna, he now lives and works in Milan where he consults for various brands.
I came across his amazing work on instagram and had to ask him to be on CITIZEN CAIN.
What’s your background? Where are you from?
I am originally Italian, but was born and raised in Germany. I grew up in Frankfurt, but my roots are from Naples in the south of Italy.
What or who is inspiring you right now?
My friends and surroundings – it has always been my number one source of inspiration. My creative circle of friends, and places and things I surround myself with.
How did you come to work in your creative industry?
It all fell into place. I worked as a dancer first which is when I met my ex boyfriend who still remains my best friend. We kind of stopped dancing around the same time, lived in Berlin for a while and then moved to Ireland to go to art school. It all started there. After a course there, I moved to London and worked hard. When I finished my BA, I was headhunted by Max Mara and the rest kind of happened organically.
How have you developed your career? What are you doing now?
With lots of hard work, treating people in the right way and making sure being open to lots of learning opportunities. Now I work as Fashion Designer and Illustrator.
What do you aim to say with your work?
Beauty and accessibility something that people desire.

Research, developing lots of ideas and solving problems
How would you define your style?
A 90s kid that never grew up.
What are the qualities that define an artist?
Being yourself and knowing what you are about.
Paint a picture of where you live/describe it
In an exciting city surrounded by friends.
What is your favourite era of design?
Art nouveau, elements of the 70s and 90s
Who has been the most inspirational person for you?
What is the project you are working on right now that you feel most passionately about?
A new illustration series that will come out in march
What’s your “typical” daily routine?
Wake up early drink lots of coffee, emails meeting and then friends and good food.
What project of yours has inspired you the most?
A lot of them, working with friends that get you, and your work process makes hard work a lot more fun. The result is 10 times better. I am a great believer in teamwork. When you get a great team then every project can be exciting and fun.
What are your beauty secrets?
Drinking lots of water, using the same moisturizer I have used since being a kid and lots of sun.
How do look after yourself mentally and physically?
Knowing who I am, having a positive attitude and not dealing with drama.
What’s your favourite film?
Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet
Do you have a favourite quote that you try to live by?
Everything happens for a reason.
Is there anything in your career that you regret not doing?/regret doing?
I don’t regret anything, everything happens for a reason 🙂
What makes you nervous?
People and their insecurities and the bad behaviour that comes with it.
Who’s the nicest person you have worked with?
With a lot of colleagues and ex colleagues, I can now call them friends.
Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
Hopefully in a beach house in Sicily, with someone I take care of and takes care of me.
Do you dream?
If you were a perfume what would you smell like?
A mix between white musk and iris.
What’s on your playlist right now?
Right now I am obsessed with Dua Lipa and this German electronic band Siriusmo. Their album comic is amazing and my queen Britney Spears.
Can you describe what you are doing now, with your life and work?
Working on lots of projects, living in the city and working towards my next big project.
