Carlos Valdivia – Illustrator
Carlos Valdivia is an artist/ illustrator living in Madrid. He is 25 and studied translation in college. He then took the path of illustration of book covers. He grew up in a small village of small white houses. At 18, he moved to Seville and then Cordoba for college. Then realised he loved drawing and design so moved to Madrid to take a chance. “and it kinda worked haha.”
What or who is inspiring you right now?
Drag queens, Spanish folklore and neon colours.
How did you come to work in the creative industry?
I started drawing as a hobby, then someone saw what I was doing and encouraged me to make a book… and so I did.
How have you developed your career? What are you doing now?
I feel like I’m still at the beginning of my career, but I’ve grown a lot since I started only 2 years ago. I’m working on books and developing my style with different series of illustrations.
Describe your creative process
It just happens. I work with pictures and references, so when I see something that inspires me… I just let myself go. Sometimes it ends good, sometimes it doesn’t, but I’m enjoying the process.
What do you want to say with your work?
I don’t have any special intention, but I would say diversity and pop culture.
How would you define your style?
A mix between pop culture and comic.
What is your favourite era of design?
I’m really happy with the one we’re living right now, digital, global art.
What’s the project you are working on right now that you feel most passionately about?
I work as a cover designer for books and each one is a challenge, so I really enjoy that.
Describe your “typical” daily routine?
Wake up, shower, work at home, have lunch, go to work, dinner, sleep. Pretty boring.
What project of yours has inspired you the most?
My book, it was challenging and I feel like I did something top for me.
What are your beauty secrets?
My beauty has no secrets haha
How do look after yourself mentally and physically?
I’ve gone to therapy for a long time, and it’s a basic part of my life right now. Mind and body should be ready for life.
What’s your favourite film?
Right now, La novia.
Do you have a favourite quote that you try to live by?
What makes you nervous?
Is there anything in your career that you regret not doing?/regret doing?
I regret not breaking my comfort zone.

Probably my editor
Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
I see myself working in a creative job, related to books and art. In any part of the world.
Do you dream?
Of course, and I try to make those dreams come true.
If you were a perfume what would you smell like?
Jasmine and orange.
